Alief Student Spotlight: Michale Le

The grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for Hill at Sims marked a historic moment for the Sunnyside community as residents gathered to celebrate the first brand-new park built in the area in nearly 50 years. Hosted by the Office of Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis and the Houston Parks Board, the event showcased a transformative 100-acre regional park designed to blend flood resilience, recreation, public art, and nature.

Among the many highlights of the celebration was the recognition of an outstanding Alief ISD student whose musical contribution will leave a lasting impact on visitors to the park. Michael Le, a 13-year-old rising eighth-grader at Killough Middle School, was honored at the grand opening for his role in a special audio experience tied to the park's permanent art installations. Michael's recording of "Reverie" by the renowned French composer Claude Debussy accompanies an audio guide titled "Behind The Wall," which helps visitors explore and understand the six reflective murals displayed throughout the park.

According to Jeremy J. King, choir and piano director at Killough Middle School, the opportunity came together on a very short timeline. "Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis was searching for a student pianist to perform Debussy's Reverie for the new Hill at Sims Park, and the opportunity was brought to Killough Middle School through Crystal Toussant, our drama, speech, and debate teacher", explained King.

There was one challengeโ€”the performance needed to be completed within 24 hours.

King immediately thought of Michael, a talented young musician who is actively involved in the orchestra, the National Junior Honor Society, and the school's piano ensemble. Working alongside orchestra director David Hughes, King helped Michael prepare for the project. His performance ultimately impressed organizers and was selected by Commissioner Ellis for the permanent installation.

During the grand opening celebration, Michael was invited to attend and was publicly acknowledged for his artistic contribution to the park. The recognition highlights the remarkable talents of Alief ISD students and the importance of arts education in developing future leaders and creators. "This is Alief excellence," said King. "I am honored to have been part of such an amazing district with amazing students. This is why the arts are importantโ€”because this is the greatness we can produce."

The new Hill at Sims park offers visitors a unique outdoor experience, featuring scenic overlook areas connected by a 1.6-mile loop trail, nearly five miles of hike-and-bike trails, a hilltop pavilion with views of downtown Houston, Uptown, and the Texas Medical Center, a water access pier for recreational fishing, a nature center pavilion, and access to more than 20 miles of trails along the Sims Bayou Greenway.

As community members explore the park's trails, public art, and natural spaces, they will also experience the musical talent of one of Alief ISD's ownโ€”a lasting reminder that student excellence extends far beyond the classroom and into the broader community.
